What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined by the extent to which a man cannot achieve and, or maintain sufficient erection hardness for a satisfying sexual experience. ED is a common condition that can happen at any age. Currently, more than 150 million men worldwide have ED.

Many chronic conditions affect erection hardness and are linked to ED.

The prevalence of ED in men with various chronic disorders and habits:

Disease

Percentage of patients with ED

Peripheral vascular disease

86%

Coronary artery disease

75%

Hypertension

68%

Diabetes mellitus

64%

Smoking

43%

Men with elevated serum cholesterol level (>240 mg/dL) had an 80% increase in the risk of developing ED.

Erection hardness is important to both men and women

  • In Asia, 57% of men and 64% of women are not fully satisfied with their sex lives
  • In addition, 93% of men and 83% of women believe erection hardness is important for a good sexual experience
  • Women are less satisfied with suboptimal erections and worry about their partner’s health and feelings

What is suboptimal erection hardness (EHS grade 3)?

  • For a fully satisfying sexual experience, a completely hard and fully rigid erection is required. Therefore, EHS grade 4 corresponds to optimal erection hardness
  • When the penis is sufficiently hard for penetration but not completely rigid during intercourse, this is considered suboptimal erection hardness corresponding to EHS grade 3
  • Suboptimal erections are a concern for many men and women in Asia. About one in four men reported suboptimal erections
  • Of men with suboptimal erections, 92% are interested in improving their sexual experience. Of women who consider their partners to have suboptimal erections, two out of three are interested in improving their sexual experience

What does optimal erection hardness mean?

Increasing erection hardness from suboptimal (EHS grade 3) to optimal (EHS grade 4) improves intercourse satisfaction, orgasm quality and sexual desire, and increases confidence, self-esteem and relationship satisfaction.

How can I achieve optimal sexual health?

  • If you have concerns about your erection hardness, consult your doctor about possible solutions and medications available
  • Do not ignore sexual problems. These may be symptoms of serious medical conditions, so consult your doctor
  • If sexual intercourse hurts, seek professional help. Dry, uncomfortable intercourse can be avoided by using a lubricant
  • Enjoy an active and healthy life. What is good for your health and mind is also good or your sex life
  • Make your relationship your top priority. Sexual difficulties can be an indication that your relationship needs your attention
